My husband and I have some slight differences in the way that we view camping. Previous to getting married, I was the gal who camped in the rain on deserted forestry roads out in the woods, and canoed into free rec sites only accessible by river (with no outhouses, thank you very much).
He, on the other hand, prefers camping a la Holiday Inn, or at the very least, a hostel. He can’t fathom what I see in camping, dislikes the set up and take down, and wonders why we didn’t just stay home, let the kids sleep in sleeping bags, and roast hotdogs on the bbq.
I’ve been a long-time fan and friend of Katie, from Kitchen Stewardship, and was so happy to see her put out this amazing ebook– Kitchen Stewardship in the Big Woods: Family Camping Handbook with Real Food Options! Perhaps now I can find ways to make camping easier, more family-friendly, and more enjoyable for my darling hubby’s sake!
More Than Just a Recipe Book…
When I first heard about the book that she was writing, I thought the focus was going to be solely on how to cook real, whole foods even while camping.
This book is definitely about that. But it is also SO much more than that.
Katie has actually put together a very comprehensive, thorough and helpful guide for moms and dads who want to get out into nature with their kids and enjoy the frugality and simplicity that camping offers, but without the general frustration and challenges that camping can present.
What The eBook Includes:
- Tips for simple camping cooking and campfire management
- Suggestions and even helpful lists for packing and preparing
- Creature comfort help: bugs, weather, personal care in the woods
- Fun ideas and activities for kids of all ages
- More than 20 real food recipes, with camping in mind
- Printable lists for groceries, packing, preparation checklists, etc.

We love to camp but pre-realfoods, I would buy all the package, convenience foods that we didn’t regularly eat. I would love to learn how to incorporate real foods into camping trips!

I love camping, but have never been with my children. My oldest is only three, so I have just recently been out of the “pregnant/nursing/pregnant/nursing” cycle for a few months…and I can’t imagine being either the way my husband and I like to camp! Soon enough, we will try it with the kids, who are sure to love it. We’re big outdoor fans and we HAVE to camp near the water

We’re big campers here as well. I love to meal plan before we head out, but so many times our meals are less than I desired. I so want to take our new lifestyle on the road with us.

Took the poll as well.
I like camping as long as there’s an air mattress involved! I grew up camping in a popup camper with my family which is also an option. I’m not a fan of sleeping on the hard ground.
I subscribe to saving naturally.
We love camping as a family. My husband is the cook when we go camping as he loves to use his cast iron, but I would love some ideas outside of biscuits and potatoes.

I haven’t been camping in a looooonnnnnnngggg time, but I think the whole family would enjoy it! I need all the help I can get preparing for it though, so this book would be awesome!!
we love camping and being outside. our biggest challenge right now — and the reason i’d love the book — is that we have two young children (and hope to have more); i’d love the ideas about camping with a young family, as well as ideas for incorporating more real food into our camping trips!

i completed the survey, but it didn’t give me a chance to enter my name or email address…just telling you here in the comments that i did it!
I’ve never camped before…but I would LOVE to! The main reason I haven’t is because I though I might starve because processed packaged foods just make me sick now since I haven’t eaten them in so long. This book would absolutely solve my problems and would free me to camp out!
Thank you so much for the opportunity…your blog is a blessing!
I used to love to camp, but my husband’s idea of camping is MUCH more rustic than mine! We have to come to a compromise, and then incorporating food options! I need this book for any simplifying possible.

I filled out the survey but there was no place to put my name and contact info.
Just so you know.
I only went camping a couple times myself before having kids, so while I really like the idea, I’m so inexperienced that it makes me nervous about dealing with 100 unknowns…with kids
We have only been camping a few time – and loved it – and would love to know how to glean from her experience!
I grew up in Montana and never really camped there, but now, living in Arizona, we camp more often. Because we have to be gluten/dairy free, any hints are always appreciated. Thanks!

My husband and I met in a backpacking class, so I have a fond spot in my heart for camping.
We haven’t been brave enough to go with a toddler, though, so I would love to read this e-book!

We’re the same way! I love camping….used to be so hard core, backpacking to the top of mountains. My hubby had barely been “car camping.” So now we compromise and do a whole lot of car camping and it seems to work out well….although I know it’s not my hubby’s favourite way to vacation. This book sounds absolutely awesome!

My favorite thing about camping is when I get to that nature-induced state of relaxation. Nothing like it.
