    Stephanie,
I’m just now getting into canning and such. I do not have ANYTHING yet. What would you recommend?

@Erin, Start with just a regular canning pot (not a pressure one), a set of basic tools (canning tongs, funnel, etc.) and jars and lids. Much of it you can get for free or cheap, from friends or family who don’t use their canning equipment, from Craigslist, from garage sales who want to practically give it away. Thrift stores can be helpful, too. Then buy new what you aren’t able to scrounge up used.

Keep it simple your first year. Pick just a couple of things you want to make (maybe diced tomatoes and strawberry jam, for example). You want it to be successful, and you don’t want to put out a whole bunch of money before you know that this is something you think you would keep on doing! Good luck!
